Free Writing

Background

Freud called it free association; the Surrealists called it automatic writing; Julia Cameron called it Morning Pages. Whatever the label, the mechanism is the same: bypass the executive editor of the prefrontal cortex by writing so fast and so unfiltered that only the substrate has time to respond. What emerges is not the conscious mind's opinion of itself — it is the layer underneath, briefly given a channel.

Get a pen and paper. Write the first word that comes to mind. Then the next. It does not need to make sense. Do not second-guess. Do not stop.

The Practice

  1. 01

Sit somewhere quiet. Paper and pen only — no keyboard.

  2. 02

Set a timer for 15 minutes.

  3. 03

Write the first word that comes to mind. Then the next. Then the next.

  4. 04

Do not lift the pen. Do not correct. Do not judge. If nothing comes, write ‘nothing nothing nothing’ until something else arrives.

  5. 05

Keep going. Ten minutes in, the layer changes. Twenty minutes in, it changes again.

  6. 06

When the timer ends, stop. Read what you wrote, once, without editing.

  7. 07

Do not analyze on the day of writing. Come back to it tomorrow, if at all.

What surfaces in the last five minutes is usually not what surfaced in the first five. That is the whole point.
