The Exit

Background

The felt center of your identity — the ‘I’ located just behind your eyes — is a spatial coordinate the brain constructs and maintains through constant unconscious inference. It is not fixed. Studies of out-of-body illusions (Blanke et al., Ehrsson) show the perspective can be relocated with modest sensory manipulation. This meditation moves the coordinate voluntarily and in graduated stages — up out of the room, past the atmosphere, out of the solar system — training the mind to hold vastness as a stable perceptual state.

You sit, and instead of looking out through your eyes, you imagine seeing yourself from above — as if a camera is slowly pulling upward, carrying your awareness with it. The room shrinks. The house shrinks. The Earth becomes a small thing you can hold in thought.

The Practice

  1. 01

Sit comfortably with eyes closed. Do not try to leave the body — simply shift where you imagine seeing from.

  2. 02

Visualize yourself from directly above. See your hair, shoulders, the chair. Hold for a minute.

  3. 03

Let the camera rise slowly. Watch yourself shrink into the room.

  4. 04

Continue rising. House. Street. Neighborhood. Stay at each altitude until stable.

  5. 05

City. State. Continent. The curve of the Earth. The blue of the oceans.

  6. 06

Keep going. Moon, planets. Sun as one star among stars. The galaxy as a swirl you can hold in attention.

  7. 07

At your farthest stable distance, rest. Nothing to solve. Just a viewpoint suspended in depth.

  8. 08

Return slowly. Re-trace the path backward, letting each scale re-assert itself.

  9. 09

Open your eyes. Notice if your own face feels less like the center of everything.

The body thinks it is the center of experience because it is where the senses converge. But awareness itself has no fixed address.
