Background
Present a 200 Hz tone to one ear and 210 Hz to the other and the brain does not hear two tones. It generates a phantom 10 Hz pulsation — the binaural beat — inside the auditory cortex itself. The frequency is not physically present in either signal. It is manufactured by the brain's attempt to align the two inputs. This practice uses that phenomenon as a meditation object: attend to a tone your ears are not receiving, produced entirely by your own neural processing.
Play a binaural beats track through headphones. What you will hear is a pulsing that does not exist in either channel — your brain is making it.
The Practice
- 01
Put on headphones. Play a binaural track (e.g. 8–10 Hz theta or 6 Hz).
- 02
Close your eyes. Do not fight the sound; let it enter.
- 03
After a minute, notice a slow pulsation — a beat that seems to be inside your head, not in either ear.
- 04
That beat is not in the audio file. It is your auditory cortex.
- 05
Attend to the pulse. Let it entrain your breath if it wants to.
- 06
Sit with the fact that you are listening to your own neural computation.
The binaural beat is a small window onto the fact that all of your perception is constructed — but usually the construction is invisible. Here, briefly, it isn't.
