Hear the chord, not the note.
The Curriculum
These meditations build on each other. The first widens the aperture; the next presses against it; the later ones layer the sense together with the others. Each one is a muscle — the more you use it, the stronger it becomes.

Any sound in your room — a fan, a distant car, a fridge hum — is not a single tone. It is a fundamental frequency plus a stack of overtones, plus reflections off every surface in the space. Your auditory cortex compresses that spectrum into a single label ('fan') so you don't have to parse it every time. This practice widens the lens: it asks you to hear the layers your brain routinely discards.

A held musical note is never perfectly steady. Even from a professional instrument, the pitch oscillates minutely — vibrato is the amplified version of what is already there in any sustained tone. Your auditory system averages the oscillation into a single perceived pitch. This practice teaches you to hear the oscillation itself — the note as a wave, not a point.

The high-pitched ringing most people hear in silent rooms is not silence at all — it is the auditory system's spontaneous activity, usually masked by environmental sound. It has structure: a fundamental frequency, harmonic layers, and small pulsations synchronized with heartbeat and breath. This practice attends to that internal signal as a meditation object rather than as a nuisance.

Auditory imagery activates much of the same cortex as actual hearing. When you imagine a tone, primary auditory cortex responds. This practice generates a steady imagined tone and raises its pitch in stages, discovering that there is no ceiling — the imagined frequency can always go higher. The ceiling is not in frequency. It is in the willingness of attention to follow.

Ordinary listening is serial and selective — the cocktail-party effect. You attend to one voice or object and the rest becomes background. This practice inverts the strategy: attend to nothing in particular, and let the entire soundscape enter as a single unified acoustic event. Not analysis. Composition.

Where Unify collapsed the field into one event, this practice does the opposite: it attempts to attend to every source in the room simultaneously and individually. The global workspace resists — as with The Two Rooms, single-channel access forces serial attention. Held long enough, the attempt trains the aperture wider. It is auditory bifurcation practice.

Present a 200 Hz tone to one ear and 210 Hz to the other and the brain does not hear two tones. It generates a phantom 10 Hz pulsation — the binaural beat — inside the auditory cortex itself. The frequency is not physically present in either signal. It is manufactured by the brain's attempt to align the two inputs. This practice uses that phenomenon as a meditation object: attend to a tone your ears are not receiving, produced entirely by your own neural processing.
