The body as instrument, not object.
The Curriculum
These meditations build on each other. The first widens the aperture; the next presses against it; the later ones layer the sense together with the others. Each one is a muscle — the more you use it, the stronger it becomes.

The default-mode network keeps you in autobiographical simulation — replay, planning, self-story. Exteroceptive enumeration (naming what your senses are actually receiving) interrupts the simulation and re-anchors attention in the current moment. Short and frequent beats long and occasional for nervous-system regulation.

Interoception — the perception of internal bodily states — is regulated by the insular cortex. Higher interoceptive accuracy correlates with better emotional regulation, decision-making under uncertainty, and reduced reactivity. The body scan systematically routes attention through the body, training the interoceptive channel. It is the oldest documented meditation technique (Vipassana) and one of the most consistently effective in clinical trials (MBSR, MBCT).

The nervous system encodes the somatic signature of past affective peak states alongside their autobiographical memory. With training, the memory-scaffold can be discarded and the somatic signature recalled directly — then amplified by breath, facial micro-expression, and sustained attention. What begins as recall becomes induction. The body learns to release its own chemistry on command because the command has become legible to it.

Mortality salience reliably reorders value hierarchies and motivates pro-social, meaning-oriented behavior (terror management research; Vail et al. 2012). The book's framing — death as the structural complement of life rather than its negation — provides a non-pathological scaffold for the contemplation.

Consciousness is not binary — it sits on a spectrum. Most of a normal day runs on conditioned autopilot: you cannot recall what you ate for lunch yesterday, the color of a coworker's eyes, the texture of the shirt on your back. Then occasionally the dial turns up. Colors saturate, time dilates, edges sharpen, the self seems to extend outward into the room. Neurochemically this is a coordinated release — noradrenaline sharpens signal-to-noise in cortex (locus coeruleus), dopamine tags salience, acetylcholine amplifies attentional gain, endogenous opioids soften threat, and default-mode chatter recedes. The nervous system already knows how to produce this state; it has done it before. This practice is a deliberate re-entry: recall the state vividly enough that the brain re-releases the same chemistry and locks in.
